About us

Queen Mary Innovation Ltd commercialises innovations emerging from Queen Mary University of London.

We work closely with Queen Mary academics to build their innovations into successful businesses or social ventures, or to license them to innovative companies who can take the technology forwards.

We do this because – whether it’s in science, medicine, dentistry, engineering, or humanities – we believe commercial tools are among the best ways to turn leading research into real world impact.

At QMI, we connect businesses and investors with exciting innovation opportunities; coach researchers in how to understand the market for their ideas; and find talented CEOs who can lead our spinout companies on to future growth.

The returns are shared with academic creators and reinvested into future research and translation – thereby helping to create the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Alongside traditional spinouts, we’re supporting new activity to grow social ventures at Queen Mary. SHAPE (Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts for People and the Economy) commercialisation is an emerging field which focuses on how we can draw on research in humanities and social sciences to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing society today from climate breakdown to developing healthcare models of the future.

An innovation hub

Queen Mary is unique for its combination of world-class research, excellence in education and commitment to social justice.

Our research is globally significant

92% of Queen Mary’s research is internationally excellent or world-leading. From the laboratory bench to public health initiatives, we’re at the forefront of innovation in medicine and dentistry, finding solutions to some of the world’s greatest health challenges. Our world-class science and engineering research produces fundamental knowledge and translational impact to benefit society and our research in humanities and social sciences seeks to broaden the frontiers of knowledge and enhance understanding of the world in which we live.

We’re commercially focussed

Queen Mary contributes £4.4 billion of economic impact, including £1.44 billion from research and knowledge exchange, and we’re the best in the Russell Group for social mobility. We’re top quintile for commercialisation and intellectual property in Research England’s Knowledge Exchange Framework.

We make a real-world impact

We work with Barts Health NHS Trust to link over 7.5 million patients from 97 nations with world class health research. We’re part of Barts Life Sciences, an ongoing project to build a world leading life sciences campus at Whitechapel focusing on digital and prevision healthcare.

Nestled between the City of London and Canary Wharf, Queen Mary is the perfect place to turn world leading research into commercial success.
