Queen Mary Innovation 9 Pipeline 9 Humanities and Social Sciences

SHAPE (Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts for People and the Economy) commercialisation is an emerging field which focuses on how we can draw on research in humanities and social sciences to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing society today from climate breakdown to developing healthcare models of the future.

Traditional STEM commercialisation is often based on technologies and patentable Intellectual Property. SHAPE is more likely to involve ‘softer’ forms of intellectual property such as know how and may begin with a new tool, process or service. As a result, SHAPE requires a different approach.

At Queen Mary we’ve recently begun to explore opportunities for SHAPE research commercialisation in collaboration with other universities. We are members of the ASPECT network.

Areas of research with potential for SHAPE commercialisation may include: climate and biodiversity; public healthcare; and communities and education.
